directed by Richard Quine, written by Evan Hunter (aka Ed McBain) after one of his novels.

The ever clenched-jawed Kirk Douglas and the bovine Kim Novak began to bore me to death… until I found that, after all, if the movie was slow paced, it was in perfect accordance with the story, an anti-climactic story, soft spoken, of love, lust, missed opportunities, hesitations, and conformation. Actually a rather valuable story, whose characters are well depicted—Ernie Kovacs, Walter Matthau and even Barbara Rush have things to do and to say, and they do them quite well.

Nothing too mysterious in the wheel department, as you have already seen.

Apparently the 1961 song "Walk On By" uses the title in it.

Don't pick on Kim Novak, she was always picked on.

During Vertigo for example. "When she reported to her dressing room in the morning of the first day, there was a plucked chicken hanging from her mirror; when she turned around, she found Hitchcock, Stewart, and the crew gathered at her door to see her reaction."

And again at the recent Oscars.

Read the trivia for this movie on imdb. Apparently she brought some of it on herself. One co-worker took great offense. Maybe that co-worker overreacted.

(Hey, guys, I just gave sort of a diary of DidierF-watching-Strangers-When-We-Meet… And in the end, as I said it—though in French only—I found the movie quite valuable, including Miss Novak's performance, who is in many different ways very touching at times. Nevertheless, I find her… How would I put it? "Shy". Yes, she looks like a shy actress. Strange impression.)

@chicomarx: I'm really sorry, because I didn't intend to make fun of her. Actually, I rather appreciated her performance whenever I happened to watch a movie with her in it -which was not very often, to be honest. IMHO, no other actress could have replaced her in "Vertigo", for instance. Grace Kelly just wouldn`t have worked, Tipi Hedren of course neither. And Kirk Douglas was also one of the greatest actors of that era. But on the other hand, I just liked the way Didier described his first impressions of the movie. In the end, he gave it a rather favourable review.

Hitchcock was always infatuated with his blonde leading ladies and would make suggestive comments to them, it's often been said. For Kim Novak he had a plucked chicken, I never understood that.

DidierF gives longer and longer reviews when you encourage him. ;) /movie.php?id=71890

Thanks for posting this movie, DidierF - not only lots of great cars but so many vintage L.A. locations (like Romanoff's Restaurant and the shopping center)!
