This is the Savoia-Marchetti S.55 (maiden flight 1924). The pictures probably show the crossing of the Atlantic to Chicago's Century of Progress International Exposition. The Italian Air Marshall Italo Balbo led 24 aircraft on July 1st, 1933, from Orbetello, Italy, completing the flight in just over 48 hours, maintaining a tight 'V' formation. |

The first airship in the above pictures show the USS Akron (ZRS-4), maiden flight in 1931, crashed April 4th, 1933. In experiments it was used as a flying aircraft carrier. This idea was used in the third Indiana Jones film. The airship at the end of above pictures is the Zeppelin LZ 129 Hindenburg, first flown in 1936, lost May 6th, 1937. |
