DynaMike ◊ 2010-08-27 23:44	These had different names in different languages, depending on where it was sold originally. I don't know wether it was sold in Syria when new. It could of course be a second hand car from anywhere where the Rekord [D] Van was sold. In Germany (where I guess most of these were sold) it was Lieferwagen, in France Fourgonnette, in Holland Bestelwagen, etc...

There was a cheaper truck-tax for them, but the "Caravan" (to use the Opel-term) with windows were much more popular. I think, there were other countries, where they were sold more. For example Denmark and especially Norway. Every Norwegian movie, Lateef has posted here, contains several of these vans, not only Opels. By myself I have seen more "Bestelwagen"-versions of many cars in the Netherlands (often with the higher plastic-roof) than in Germany. Not to forget Greece! In 1993 on Corfu I was very suprised about the real old panel-vans -mainly Opel- there. Often abandoned, but still existing. Even one Rekord A I have seen! Also Rekord C and D. Sometimes in that years I've read in my oldtimer-magazine, that only 2 or 3 Lieferwagen-Rekord were still alive in Germany.

The pics. of the cars going under the bridge is in downtown Damascus and the bridge is called Victoria. The 8th thumbnail that shows a Mitsubishi Colt and VW Golf taxis, is at the Youssef al-Azmeh Square, also in downtown Damascus. The 7th thumbnail with the white Peugeot 504 is located in the Mezzah (name of an area in Damascus) highway. karoomay ◊ 2010-08-28 01:37	The cars that I see prominently (form left to right) in the thumbnails (of course the ones in Syria) are: 1) Mitusbishi Colt & VW Golf taxis, blue early 1960s Opel Rekord? sedan, Mitsubishi Lancer taxi 2) Renault 4 L, Mitusbishi Colt, & 3 Mitsubishi Lancer taxis. 3 & 4) Another 2 Mitsubishi Lancer taxis, and a black VW T2. 5) Fiat or Lada taxi and Opel Rekord D Van (as ingo mentioned) 6) Behind white Opel van is a Mercedes W116 and another Mitsubishi Colt taxi 7 & 8) I mentioned in my comment above what cars I see. 9) I see the back of a red Peugeot 404 to the right. 10) The white microvan is either a Honda Acty or Suzuki Carry. 11 & 14 which are exactly the same) green Mazda 929, bronze Fiat 124, VW Golf taxi, blue Peugeot 304, & white Mazda B-Series. 12 & 13) Peugeot 404 taxi and unidentified taxi next to it. -- Last edit: 2010-08-28 01:48:18

Whenever I go to the Netherlands, I see panel vans based on nearly everything : Golf (IV) Variant, Hyundai Galloper, and many more.
Lateef ◊ 2010-08-28 19:41	I've seen a couple of MB W124's in Norway with green plates (vans and pickups only) and with higher roofs. I keep wondering if these are factory made van conversions, or locally made ones. Apropos old Opel-based vans, there's a creme 1967 Opel Rekord Varebil parked a few blocks away from my house. DynaMike ◊ 2010-08-28 20:02	In Holland there used to be big differences in road tax on cars and commercial vehicles (like vans). But the laws concerning what could be regarded as a van often changed. Sometimes side windows were allowed, sometimes not, rear seats are only allowed when the length of the luggage room is more than something, and the raised roof is because of some required interior height... I think the road tax difference was dropped a few years ago and now there's only a difference in purchase tax.
Ingo ◊ 2010-08-28 22:21	Such a law we had also in Germany. It was cancelled ca.5 years ago. There was the possibility to register a car as a light truck for lower road tax, if it had a big back door, no back seats (without any possibility to mount some. The nuts and holders had to be cutted off) and no back side windows. Glass windows had to be replaced by metal, overpainting or covering with tape was not enough. In my former neighbourhood in Dortmund there were a 32B-Passat, a Mercedes W123 T-Modell and a Nissan Patrol converted in this way, to identify by the welded side windows. There was a specific rule for the small Bundespost-delivery-cars (VW Käfer, Golf I, Polo 6N), as they were allowed to have back side windows. You could keep this lower truck-tax, as the second owner, when you bought such an used post-service-car. Since this possibility was cancelled, these selfmade light trucks and former post-cars disappeared quite fast.

karoomay ◊ 2011-10-08 19:47	Out of curiosity, and I don't know why I didn't do this earlier, I decided to watch the beginning of this movie where it took place in Syria and found it easily on Russian Google, under the video search: http://video.yandex.ru/users/v3834400/view/1436/ 3loader was right about it being cheesy , but it was interesting seeing Syria being used as a location in a Russian film, and I was able to recognize many of the areas where the scenes in Damascus were filmed. There was some continuity errors for the driving scenes where it would jump from one part of the city to another, but most people who are not familiar with Damascus would not notice that. But overall, I enjoyed watching those scenes, and it reminded me a lot of Damascus in the 90s during my childhood years.
