Channel 5 remake of ITV's Shroud for a Nightingale and other stories based on PD James' novels about Inspector Adam Dalgliesh. But first 2 episodes are clunky with wooden two-dimensional stereotypes, characters who recite bad scripts instead of acting, genre cliches pop up all over the place and it's basically just boring - ITV did it much better in the 1980s, including the theme music. Filmed in Northern Ireland, set about 1975. Lazy name for a newspaper Randomly located bus stop in the middle of nothing |

Eps 1.03 and 1.04 are remake of "The Black Tower" ... and turn a weak story into a load of twaddle. Again it's wooden, clunky and bursting with cliches, and now adds lots of silly production goofs into the mix - things keep happening which are implausible or impossible. Have also noticed all the cars are in absolutely perfect condition - all glistening restos without a speck of dirt on their polished chrome. Rejects - ep 1.04 - 2 things outside police station - brown, yellow with sporty black bits - the brown looks like Allegro, yellow/black is Dolomite Sprint - side window shape is clear in previous frame. The big house where all the dead bodies start piling up started to look familiar from another series filmed in Northern Ireland. -- Last edit: 2021-11-21 23:36:37 |

Eps 1.05 and 1.06 are remake of A Taste for Death Sadly no improvement on previous eps - bland, formulaic, wooden, boring. The first eps with urban street settings - various locations revisited a few times as these eps progress and each location has its own group of cars, so these keep popping up trundling up or down the road on each visit. Continuity is completely haphazard - several scenes have a car arriving from an impossible direction from what it's just done in the preceding shot in the sequence. Two rejects from ep 1.05: - a green Frogeye Sprite at start - Cortina 1600E (gold with vinyl roof) goes across background at least twice |

I wonder if that house was also seen in a George Gently episode shot in NI. |

It's Grey Abbey House, built in 1762 and overlooking Strangford Lough on the Ards Peninsula in County Down, Northern Ireland. Looks as if lots of things have been filmed there. There's a ruined grey abbey as well. |

S2 eps 01 and 02 are remake of Death of an Expert Witness. ... and they're just as wooden and clunky as the S1 stories - ho hum. Reject: - blurry green Imp in 2.01 - possibly a 68+ facelift Super Imp. |

S2 eps 2.05 and 2.06 are remake of The Murder Room (one of the tail-end originals when Martin Shaw took over from Roy Marsden as Adam Dalgliesh) ... and is probably the worst of these Channel 5 remakes - cliche overload, and the plot doesn't really make any sense. Finale of 2.06 has this parting view outside "Scotland Yard" - all seen in various entries except 3rd from left (white or perhaps silver with black roof) which I don't recognise popping up anywhere else - might be a Mk3 Zodiac Executive?? Ep 2.05 - toy Minor 1000 Convertible - small scale (1:66 or smaller), unsure if a budget toy or a collectble. |
