"A documentary on how the spirit of unity which buoyed Britain during the war years, carried through to create a vision of a fairer, united society", directed by Ken Loach. Surprisingly subdued for a Loach feature - comes over more as an educational film for schools or Open University than a socio-political statement, but does have underlying message of how much the radical programmes for a New Britain in the 1950s have been steadily dismantled by Thatcherism and its successors. It does evoke a lot of the themes running at the moment in Scotland which underpin why there is so much interest in independence, and maybe why Jeremy Corbyn's recent election as Labour leader was so popular with the party membership. So maybe Ken is prescient??

Almost all footage is black-and-white, including a lot of more recent sequences which would have been colour but have been reprocessed, but last 2 minutes suddenly erupts into colour for 1945 street celebrations up to end title

Indian Government Railway WG Class locomotive No. 8350 built by North British Locomotive Co. at Glasgow (26463/1950) is seen at the Festival of Britain in London before it was shipped to India.

Presumably at the St Rollox works just north of the city centre, now the site of a huge Tescos which I frequent frequently. Cheapest petrol in my bit of Glasgow as well.

Presumably not. The Caley and the North British were separate organisations.
The Caledonian Railway became part of the LMS in 1923, the North British Railway Company became part of the London and North Eastern Railway, and the history of the North British Locomotive Company (not the same thing) is shown below.

When you have spent much of your life living on the land traversed by the London and North Western Railway Company, (the Premier Line according to its advertising) railways become part of your reason to exist.

I never spent my time listening to "parbular toons".

St Rollox and Springburn are the same site, which attracted various loco builders. "There were four main railway manufacturing sites that located in Springburn; the North British Railway's (NBR) Cowlairs Works in 1841, the Caledonian Railway's St. Rollox Works in 1856, Neilson and Company's Hyde Park Works in 1861 and Sharp Stewart and Company's Atlas Works in 1888. The latter two eventually amalgamated to become part of the North British Locomotive Company (NBL) in 1903. Also located in Springburn is the Eastfield Running Shed, originally built by the North British Railway (NBR) near the Cowlairs Works in 1904." and subsequent story - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springburn . Seems NBL had another site at Polmadie (Queens Park) in S Glasgow - now a Virgin trains depot for West Coast Mainline, but Springburn was main NBL facility for production, and with all the various firms involved at one stage was making 25% of the world's steam engine manufacture.

25% of the world's steam "engines".

Which is a fact which you can direct at supporters of the Great Way Round, who seem to think that nothing happens but at Swindon.

The politics of the demise of such works present a problem, since a lot of their market was to countries in the Empire, who, when they gained independence either set up their own industries to build their railway equipment, or bought more cheaply from fellow travellers. The markets in South American countries disappeared north to the USA, leaving companies from the mighty North British to the minnow Bagnall of Stafford searching for crumbs from the captain's table.
