Each episode takes a year (ep1 = 1977-78, ep2 1978-79, etc) until 1983 when it was filmed and broadcast. Flavour very much of attempting a Grange-Hill-for-grown-ups series, with lots of contemporary themes - working class lives in council flats, unemployment and recession, skinheads, racism, punk rock, bent Met. policemen etc. I've slight memories of it as being really good at the time, but revisiting now it seemed very slow and predictable in first few episodes before it got moving. It is more of a subtle character study of small people living small lives than something which shouts its messages loudly (Eastenders) or bangs the table (Boys from the Blackstuff), and is well worth sticking with.
