William Dieterle's is loosely based on Hammett's Maltese Falcon but treated as a comedy. Alas, while good looking, faux-light-hearted Bette Davis - Warren William duet is by no mean level with Powell-Mirna Loy Thin Man. In this loud and unwitty comedy, talents (if there was any) are wasted, to the possible exception of Arthur Treacher, the only one able to make me smile. Twice. And the cops are invariably stupid or stupid. (Oddly enough, the whole movie looks and sounds like a heavy spoof of The Maltese Falcon, the one to be released five years later!) Noise, un-sophisticated lines, dull comedy, not even redeemed by splastick humour. A great disappointment. |

There is a very funny (and sound, in my opinion) contemporary review to be read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satan_Met_a_Lady#Critical_reception |
