6-part BBC Cold War spy series set in 1971-72, which has just resurfaced on iplayer. Reasonably watchable, but very dark film grain, lots of 70s cliches (everyone's constantly smoking and they always use Zippos - never matches or normal lighters, always drinking neat whisky, everything's various shades of brown etc). Lots of number plate witchcraft - some due to 1973+ cars being made to look 1972 or earlier, but that doesn't explain some other switching. So L suffix plates are usually dodgy, but other older ones can also be distinctly whiffy ... Also several cars recycled in different eps for different purposes and re-use by other characters and/or street furniture where they shouldn't be. Plus various mixed batches of particularly BMC things (ADO16s, ADO17, Maxis, ADO9/ADO38) and Capris pretending to be the same car. Several locations - a lot were Birmingham pretending to be "London" - eg Spaghetti Junction/Gravelly Hill Interchange on M6 (which was still being built in 72) - the old city fire station at Aston (with Aston University looming over it) - also used in S1 of Line of Duty - distinctive traditional street signs Some TVs A mildly significant book The Dice Man by "Luke Rhinehart" -"The cult classic that will change your life" .... Train Planes from ep6 for impdb - probably stock footage. Do they fit "1972"? Bonus capture of Lydd airport (but no accompanying plane shots) |
