![]() is a movie directed by Lloyd Bacon ("screenplay by Earl Baldwin based on a story by Richard Connell"). No style in the filming, strange moments in the story—which goes from the gangster comedy to the sulpician redemption, with time for real gangster movie, and for slapstick fightin! Not exactly focussed, I would say. But, if Heinz Roemheld's score is almost unbearable, the photography, signed Tony Gaudio, is very good. What makes the movie pleasant are the actors. ![]() Ann Sothern, ![]() Humphrey Bogart (in one of his last parts as both a villain and a second billed actor) and Edward G. Robinson, who shows all over the movie his incredibly mobile and expressive face, alternatively surprised, "wise", angry, and in awe. They are quite convincing, and Ralph Bellamy is not bad either, at least for the first part of the movie. (But Allen Jenkins is a boring side-kick.) Quite pleasant in the end, and the first 45 minutes (out of 90) are a succes. ___ (*) On second thoughts, I think the short moment with traffic lights could well be taken outdoor for real, shot in a big city. -- Last edit: 2016-04-01 05:10:31 |
