![]() directed by Harold French on a screenplay based on a Georges Simenon's novel. (And filmed in Amsterdam —called Gronigen in the movie—, Paris and Nettlefold Studios, Walton-on-Thames, England.) The story of a man who escape his regular life after discovering his boss was cheating everybody. Impulsively, Kees Popinga (Claude Rains) goes from Groningen to Paris, and enters drama. Claude Rains ![]() is good, Märta Torén ![]() is fine looking, Marius Goring acts well. We have a glimpse of Herbert Lom and Felix Aylmer, and one Ferdy Mayne. And Anouk Aimée ('Aimée Anouk' then 'Anouk' between opening and closing credits) has enough screen time to show already what she'll bring to cinema: exactly nothing. Not bad, but a little short in character study and in atmosphere. We hardly find here the heaviness of Georges Simenon's world. |
