1972 made-for-TV crime-drama about the daughter of a wealthy family who is kidnapped by two men, one of them posing as a cop, and is held captive inside a coffin which she is also buried alive in!

Shockingly, this is based on an ACTUAL criminal case! Namely, the 1968 kidnapping of Barbara Jane Mackle. Her kidnappers demanded a $500'000 ransom. After the kidnappers got the money, one of them called the FBI and gave the dispatcher vague directions to where Mackle was buried. The area was swarmed by FBI agents who dug with anything they had, including their own two hands! Mackle was found dehydrated but otherwise alive and well. She had been underground for over 72 hours! The coffin was fitted with an air pump, food, two tubes that allowed fresh in and non-fresh air out. It also had bottles of water that were laced with sedatives. Both kidnappers were arrested; Gary Krist was arrested after he was found in a swamp, thanks to a tip-off. His accomplice, Ruth Eisemann-Schier, was arrested after applying for a job as a nurse at a hospital in Oklahoma and her fingerprint was traced during a background search. Krist was released after ten years so he could attend nursing school. Schier served four years before being paroled as part of her deportation back to Honduras.

Mackle wrote a book about her experience, titled 83 Hours Till Dawn. The book was published in 1971 and adapted into this TV movie the next year. The book was again adapted into TV movie in 1990 which had the exact same title as the book.
