![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 1975 made-for-TV action thriller based on the 1966 University of Texas Tower shooting, where Charles J. Whitman (played by a pre-fame Kurt Russell) went on a sniping spree on August 1st, 1966 that left 14 people dead and over 30 wounded. For several hours, he terrorized the surrounding area, shooting indiscriminately. Whitman had to contend with not only the police returning fire but, since this was 1960s Texas, just about every other person in town with good aim and a long-range weapon. At one point, a policeman even commandeers a biplane for a fly-by shooting attempt! Whitman's merciless assault on the innocent people of Austin, Texas came to a violent end when two heroic police officers, Ramiro Martinez and Houston McCoy, and a civilian, Allen Crum, made their way to Whitman's position and fatally gunned him down, putting an end to the rampage. The University of Texas tower shooting was the deadliest mass-shooting by a lone gunman in history until the San Ysidro McDonald's massacre in 1984 and the deadliest school shooting until the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting. I thought Kurt was pretty famous when he did those Dexter Riley movies for Disney. |
