With Oppenheimer still in theaters and the recent anniversary of the atomic bombings, I thought what better time to add this 1980 TV movie chronicling the events that led up to it? This film has scenes set in the US, Hawaii, the island of Tinian, and Hiroshima. Most notable among the cast is a pre-fame Billy Crystal as Lt. Jake Beser, the only member of Enola Gay's crew to also take part in the bombing of Nagasaki, using Bockscar. The actual bombing of Hiroshima is depicted, but only using stock footage of nuclear tests and footage of Hiroshima shortly after. Since this is a 1980 TV movie, they weren't allowed to go full Barefoot Gen. Enola Gay herself as seen in the film. The end of the movie details what became of those portrayed in the movie up to 1980 and as such, a number of them were still alive. As of 2014, the only survivor of the Hiroshima crew is Enola Gay herself, now on display in the Smithsonian where she has resided since 2003 after undergoing a complete restoration. At this time, it is still August 9th, 4:25 PM, Eastern Standard Time. |

Or In This Corner of the World for that matter, which just so happened to take place in the same corner of the world that my grandpa on my dad's side was stationed in... Needless to say he had his story of the "shingata bakudan" ("new bomb" in Japanese). -- Last edit: 2023-08-10 17:44:36 |
