4-part Yorkshire TV series by Alan Plater - quirky dry comedy drama which was the prototype/dry run for what became the rather wonderful Beiderbecke trilogy. Has Alun Armstrong in the James Bolam role and Bridget Turner (who?? but face is familiar) in the Barbara Flynn role. Not a forgotten gem, but agreeable enough, and many common traits - humour, jazz, Yorkshire, schoolteachers, strange mysteries which turn out to be inconsequential, comedy detectives, etc. Apparently they wanted to do a second series, but Armstrong couldn't fit it in so it was shelved until Plater rewrote it a few years later. Can be found as a DVD extra in the Beiderbecke Trilogy 21st Anniversary Edition boxset issued in 2006 by Network - see wiki, etc. Rejects: - ep2 - SD1 police car and big dark saloon - ep3 - Spitfire Mk4; Marina Mk3 and Sherpa |
