The low death count of such a cataclysmic event can be attributed to the fact that May 18th, 1980 was a Sunday and as such, all of the numerous logging operations were closed for the day. Harry R. Truman famously refused to leave his cabin on Spirit Lake and was one of the casualties. Here, he is played by Art Carney, who was reportedly Truman's favorite actor.
