A 1984 made-for-TV biopic about Soviet nuclear physicist and later dissident Andrei Sakharov, played by Jason Robards, and his civil rights movement attempts which result in him eventually being stripped of his job and salary and exiled to Gorky. He does later win a Nobel Prize, but the Soviet government would not allow him the trip to get it, but they did allow his wife the trip to accept in his honor. The VHS rip I sourced these pictures from has Danish subtitles, but the dialogue will have the first two words of a sentence spoken in English before the entire sentence is dubbed in Danish as well and it's always a man's voice, even when a woman is being dubbed over. Not sure why the dub was even necessary when the subtitles were already there. Link to "www.youtube.com" Movie was filmed in England and Austria. At first I thought this was legitimately a Soviet movie that somehow managed to wrangle a well-known American actor for the lead role, but it's actually a telemovie made by HBO. |

Vestron Video! Haven't seen this logo in ages and ages. Anyway to the point, it's "dubbed" in russian not danish. I put dubbed in quotes cause as you noticed it's not really dubbing but nevertheless it was a quite common soviet/early russian-style sort of translation, I have come across lots of stuff done like this (don't know if they still do it this way) |

I see the Vestron Video logo whenever I pop in my 1983 VHS tapes of Godzilla, King of the Monsters and Rodan! They were one of MANY independent home video distributors that come into existence in the early 1980s to put grindhouse, independent and otherwise non-major studio films on the home video market. I collect movies on VHS in addition to being a car fanatic 1'969 tapes so far, not including multiple prints of the same movie or TV show compilations with the exception of Mystery Science Theater 3000 since very episode contains a full-length movie. Yeah, I knew something was up with the "dubbing" when the words being "dubbed" in didn't match the subtitles, but I chalked it up to poor audio quality. |

Several Soviet films in the 80s with Western plots had Americans played by Russians with extremely convincing accents (Reys 222, My obviyayem, Odinochnoye plavanye) I also watched one movie with even two Soviet-American actors: /movie_6183486-Chyornyy,-kak-ya.html -- Last edit: 2023-02-25 16:23:32 |

Since this was filmed in Austria, the GAZ 24 Volgas should be renamed to Wolga Attache. /vehicle_282950-Wolga-Attache-24-1970.html |
