 In some country on the west of Europe, where people speak German, but they didn't say which one exactly it is. ;) So maybe the term "fake location", which I used twice wasn't very proper.
The scenes/shots really filmed abroad were made in the West Germany, Austria and seems at least the one with Zhiguli and 125p in the GDR maybe (~"...with help of DEFA" the credits says) - all were mixed in a one country/location. In Poland (all scenes with embassy and its closest surrounding) were mainly filmed in Gliwice (Silesia).
The real events, on which this story is somehow based (the kidnapping of the embassy staff in 1982 by the so called PAK group) took place in Bern.
