Very different from his wry comedies, but might well be his best film - stays in the mind for a long time afterwards. Beautifully filmed in British Colombia, which adds to the melancholy mood, and also means the cars should be CDN more than US. First 10 minutes set in 1948 - rest of film "7 years later", so 1955 or thereabouts. Lots of cars poked in the corner or background of sequences. Someone who knows 50s US stuff might be able to pick out a few more which I've ignored for too blurry.
