How do you classify vintage cars that don't have boots (trunks) or convertible roofs (even if they are soft tops)? A sedan is supposed to have a trunk. |

I do not really know what is the best choice for such cars  But does "sedan" require to have a trunk? In French it is only the name for 4-door 4-seats cars, so lots of old cars can go in this category. I think the definition of a sedan is a four-door car with a boot/trunk at the rear (let's forget about coupes for a second) and some of these cars don't seem to have seperate luggage space. In fact I've just been thinking, why do we classify Minis and VW Beetles as sedans (especially when the VW has it's engine in the rear)? |

Depends on the language. In French it is as I said 4-door 4-places. For old cars, it was a 4-wheel with windows and a (soft) roof. Usually the luggage space is accessible from the inside of the car, like for the old Citroën "Traction". Minis are listed as "supermini" like Fiat 500. VW Beetle is not small enough for that, and is usually defined as a sedan though it only has 2 window and not a real boot. But fact that the engine is on the rear does not cause a problem I think. There are lots of sedans with rear engine (e.g. Renault 8). |

I just look US catalogs of 1926. You find 4-door sedans, 4-door Town sedans and 2-door sedans. None of them have trunks, but all have a roof. |

It's possible that the producers shipped over some cars from Italy if they couldn't find anything suitable in China. |

Right, in China, there happened several anti-foreigners movements in the '30 and by exemple lot of cars were putted in fire around 1932. Secondly with the communist system, private cars were prohibited, so ....and nobody would keep symbols of "old time" in the garden = too dangerous. Other point, all rich chinees run away by any way when communist arrived. So, sure that they drove with the cars of the pré-war period to Formosa. |
