![[Image: title.621.jpg]](http://pics.imcdb.org/10314/title.621.jpg) After his wife dies, 90 year old Tom - played by Timothy Spall with some impressive make-up so he does look 90 - makes a final journey from John O'Groats where they'd lived back home to Land Ends where they originally came from. So it's a sentimental tear-jerker which many reviewers have apparently needed to reach for a box of tissues as he reaches the finale of his befuddled journey. But for me the film was befuddled, full of illogical holes. For a start, he bizarrely decides to do the whole trip on local buses instead of using long-distance coaches, which strings it out implausibly. Due to apparent budget problems - and I'd guess covid restrictions - the whole thing was filmed within central Scotland and Ayrshire, which knocks out most of the fun for a film from one end of Britain to the other of enjoying the locations - compare for instance The Missing Postman or First And Last. Inevitably he meets lots of people en route, but these encounters and incidents are so cliched and wooden that it all becomes predictable and boring. However it is fun spotting all the ludicrous home-made bus stops .gif ":)") Finally from our point of view, they recycle bus appearances in different parts of the "journey" - the red double-decker for instance pops up in 3 sequences several hundred "miles" apart. And they muck about with a lot of the registrations - several screenplates, some repeated on different things. So overall for me it was an irritating film which should have been a whole lot better, although I recognise that trying to make any film in the last couple of years has a problematic context. End credits acknowledge Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust and there's some McDades logos seen, so I guess between them they supplied most of the buses. |

Set-up reminds me of the "can we get to [Point of Interest] just by local bus" shows on TV Tokyo and its numerous rip-offs for me, though those ones are much less sentimental, and are actually shot on-location even during COVID state of emergencies: Link to "ja.wikipedia.org" -- Last edit: 2022-02-27 02:57:13 |

Actually they don't, but have an even more devilish technique of digitally recolouring one bus to create apparently different examples, as kudos identified here, so in reality only one of the two Dennis Tridents and one of the 3 Optare Solos is authentic. They've done it very cleverly, so it would not be spotted by the film viewer. |
