![]() ![]() 1988 made-for-TV disaster movie loosely based on the 1980 Damascus missile explosion, where a Titan II long-range ICBM exploded in it's silo. An 8-pound wrench head fell off of the torque wrench it was attached to, rolled off the side of the platform, fell down the silo, and struck a piece of metal, causing it to ricochet into the thin metal skin of the missile's first stage fuel tank. This caused fuel vapors to fill the complex over the course of several hours, completely fogging up the inside of the silo. An extractor fan was turned on hours after the missile had been punctured, causing a spark which ignited the vapors. Only the first explosion is depicted, the secondary explosion from the upper half of the missile being blown clear is absent. The search for the forcibly-ejected W-53 nuclear warhead is depicted, however. Set from August 28th to the 31st, 1982 in Texas, despite the actual explosion itself occurring on September 19th, 1980 near Damascus, Arkansas. Airdate: November 27th, 1988 |
