Actually, it's a 2003 Vauxhall Astra LS 1.4 16V and not a 1.6 like Jeremy Clarkson mentioned.

Clarkson mentions the Astra is a Bugatti Veyron compared to the vans they had. Well the performance figures for the Astra 1.4 16V 5-door Hatchback are rather underwhelming:

-0 to 62 Mph in 12 seconds and top speed of 106 Mph.

Very leisurely for a Police car, but quick enough to catch 3 middle-aged robbers in three old vans.
