No - a 5303 would be 40 feet long and 102 inches wide. This is definitely 35 feet long, 96 inches wide. Oldest it could be is a 1960 TDH4517, or it could be as recent as a 1974 T6H4523A. Some others might be able to notice details that would nail it down. It also looks like an actual Duke University Transit bus, if anyone has a roster of their equipment. |

I went to Duke University in 1993 when this movie was being filmed. I can tell you with absolute certainty that this is an actual Duke University Transit bus. If you see on the right side, it says "DU-365" - that's because DU stands for Duke University. The navy blue and yellow stripe were originally there. They painted the part below that purple and stenciled on "Eastern State University Transit" just for this movie. Before the movie, and after they were done, this part of the bus was painted white and said "Duke University Transit" in navy blue letters. It looks like the front and left side of the bus, the lettering was changed to "EU-365" instead of "DU-365", though I'm surprised they would go to that level of detail just for this movie, since this was just a brief scene. I can tell you with absolute certainty, since I rode on this actual bus in the 1990s while at Duke, that this is a 1962 GMC Coach. I remember there was a sign on the bus above the bus driver's head that said "1962 GMC Coach - Handle with care". I asked the bus driver why it said that, and he said it was because the bus had manual steering. I remember one situation where the bus was parked behind a car and the driver was no where to be found. The bus driver had to back up, and had to stand up to pull on the steering wheel (which was a wooden steering wheel) to put enough force on it to steer the thing while it was nearly stopped. The bus was an old city transit bus, though I dont know what city it was from. Duke got a lot of their buses second hand this way. Some buses I know were from Winston Salem, but I don't know if this particular bus was from there. It had navy blue vinyl seats inside. I remember the bus was OLD. A clue for me at the time was that the bus said "GM" in the old style lettering General Motors used before the mid to late 60s. Some of their other buses were from the early 70s, and those said "GMC" on the front of the bus in the more modern style rounded lettering GM used from abut 1967 or so onwards. They had one other bus, DU-364,which was nearly identical to this one, but was a 1961 GMC Coach. I was amazed they were using 30+ year old buses at the time - but apparently these buses last forever, so they kept using them. If you see the sign above the windshield, it says "East Campus". This is a bus that was regularly used to transport students from West Campus, where this scene was filmed, to East Campus, which is a mile and a half away. The sign was some sort of black rolled paper with different messages in white lettering, and the driver turned a little crank to change what the sign said. No electronic signs like what buses have now. Judging from some of the trees, this scene must have been filmed in the fall of 1992. The leaves appear to be turning color which does not happen in North Carolina until late October or early November. Who knows whatever happened to these buses. I suppose they went to the salvage yard. They'd be almost 60 years old now. -- Last edit: 2020-10-13 12:33:41 |
