Ford UK ducked out of the 69 event with an official team - they'd retired the Lotus Cortina after 1968 London-Sydney Marathon and Escort Twin Cam not yet ready for big endurance events because of transmission weaknesses, so left the arena open for Ford Cologne's competition department which was launched in early 68. Their 20M RS 2.3 (Staepelaere/Lampinen) nearly won the 68 London-Sydney during the bit in Australia where several cars each took the lead then crashed, and then entered 1969 EAS with 2 LHD 20M RS 2.3 and two of Ford UK's established EAS driver pairings: #1 Robin Hillyar/Jock Aird - winners, despite hitting a Morris Oxford taxi in the last stretch #2 Bengt Soderstrom/Gunnar Palm (who nearly won in 1967 in Cortina Mk2 GT), retired with broken axle while attempting to take lead near the end |
