Moke AU

The moke is not a 1980 Moke as it was not built in a Australia. It appears to be a late model Cagiva with 12" wheels

Depending on which source is correct, Portugese production started in 1980, 1982 or 1983. These wheel covers started on UK Minis in 1985 on the City E, and the Moke update to 12" wheels seems to be about 1986 while produced by Leyland in Portugal, 4 years before Caviga took over in 1990.

Some useful information here: http://www.runamoke.co.uk/portuguese-mokes.html

It seems 1986+ Mokes had some detail changes like metal framed deflector screens, a different roll cage (allowing rear seatbelts) etc that might help identify them more easily.

We just need to find the 'trim differences' that can ID a 1991-93 Cagiva Moke.

There are also some 1984-89 'Austin' Mini Mokes listed (these seem to need cleaning)

Didn't realise we had that little nest. All sorted now into 80-89 Portugese build Mini (as make), with a chance that one might be a Cagiva. Or just a victim of bad taste.

Now agree this is a Cagiva due to " the fitting of plastic grab handles to the top rear part of the roll cage." - 2nd thumb.

Going back to the original question of 'when did Portugese Moke production start' and the differing dates given the wording here is interesting: Link to "www.m-parts.co.uk"

Quote Jim Lambert was working as worldwide Quality Manager for Land Rover Overseas Manufacturing in 1981 and was one of those involved with the decision to end Moke production in Australia.

Initially production began as a short term solution to complete a quantity of CKD kits that had been exported to Portugal in the period just before production of the Moke ceased in Australia. These kits came to the attention of Jim Lambert who suggested that maybe a recently decommissioned British Leyland assembly plant in Portugal might be a suitable home for continued manufacture of the car. The plan was to offer them for sale and if successful, continue with manufacture of the vehicle.

The decision was taken to continue with production and the presses and jigs were shipped from Australia, and in July 1983 production started at the IMA (lndustria Montagem Automoveis) factory in Setubal. Portugal seemed the ideal location for production of the Moke. Labour costs were low, the car was nearer its principal markets in the Caribbean, and, most crucially of all, the Portuguese government's system of import quotas meant that for every Moke exported an additional Metro could be imported.

That would explain both the 1980 and 1983 dates. They started with CKD kits in 1980 and then in 1983 full production started. Or am I reading too much into this?

The best single source on late Mokes seems to be this set of pages - Link to "www.m-parts.co.uk" (and sidebar on left). Their home page states "M Parts was established in 2003 after we purchased the world's remaining stocks of genuine Moke parts and panels from Cagiva in 2003." which inspires some confidence in their narrative.

In terms of end dates for Aus, they say "Total Australian production lasted 16 years with some 26,142 vehicles manufactured between February 1966 and November 1981, although cars continued to be sold well into 1982." However I've got book references to Aus production ending in March 81 at the same total. Whichever the month, the useful fact is the year because full Portugese manufacture could not start until Aus stopped, plus whatever delay for shipping machine tools to Portugal and establishing factory facilities there.

Which seems to take until July 1983 and proper Portugese manufacture is 83+. But it also seems that a sizeable batch of Aus CKD kits went to Portugal for assembly in 1980, and possibly explains the different dates given by various sources. So unless/until we find a way of splitting 80+ and 83+ Portugese Mokes, the 1980 default is correct imcdb practice.

The updated version with revamp to incorporate UK Mini Mk5 elements (12" wheels etc) was Feb 86 onwards. Production ended July 89 after 8171 made. Cagiva started in 1991 (so there were no 1990 Mokes of any description - some cleaning needed) and ended in July 1992 after 2071 made, with many unsold until 93 or later.

Cagiva visible changes were minimal - a redesign of the sidescreens complete with weather-proof zips to make a C-shape door opening, body colour grille and bumpers, and fitting plastic grab handles to the top rear part of the roll cage. It was sold in the UK with standard or SE versions with SE having metallic paint, tints, white alloy wheels, special smaller rounded-section bumper bars etc. Other markets had 2 or 4 seat versions, with many options/extras depending on country requirements.

:king: Am also begining to think Cagivas had red grille badge instead of previous silver/grey and had a brace on the rear wing top to connect to the roll cage, but neither of these are yet confirmed.
