As far as I understand, this is a GUY BIG J 4 http://www.historywebsite.co.uk/Museum/Transport/commercial/Guy/guyhistory7.htm , but I don't know if it's a J 4 or a J 4 T. Perhaps the badge could indicate what engine is fitted but I haven't found a match so far. It's not a Gardener, Catepillar or Rolls-Royce badge - what else remains? |

Hiya JCB, This vehicle is a Big 'J'4t, as it is a 4 = 4 wheel 't' = tractor unit. A Big 'J' 4 would be a flat bed truck, as would be a 'J' 6, 6 wheeler, a 'J' 8 an 8 wheeler. 'J' 4. 6 and 8's could all be tow trucks, rarely though. They would be flat beds but mostly tippers, though British Steel at their Stocksbride plant near Sheffield did have a rare 100 ton 'J' 8 as a tractor unit for moving full vessels, (Crucible), of molten steel from one part of the plant to another. A 'j' 4 and 6 would be powered by a Leyland 401 Fixed head or AEC 471, both straight 6 cylinders, in its early years it could have a Perkins like an early Seddon before the merger with Atkinson. 'J' 4t's would have either a Rolls Royce 220 b.h.p, Cummins 220, Gardener 180,(6LXB), 150, (6LX) or the later straight 8 cylinder 240, (LLXB), though we never saw many of that powered truck or the Cummins 210 V6. Looking at the metal grill it is not any of the Gardners, as they would have had fibrglass grills. It is the original cab design prior to the 1975 modified cab. Hope this is of interest. |

PS: They did'nt fit Caterpillar as far as I am aware, we never had parts or books for that manufacturer. They also had the AEC AV505 for their tractors as well as the 471 for their rigids. -- Last edit: 2018-11-12 12:54:38 |

The nationalised fleets of that era tended to have RR engines in the Big Js, Seddons and Crusaders |
