- Bespoke Edinburgh Green livery, original Grey leather upholstery and current (third private) ownership since 1977

Needing a full four-seater to transport his family as well as any attendant security detail but wanting something sporting, exclusive and British, the Duke chose a Lagonda 3 Litre Drophead Coupe. .... it had several personalised features including Edinburgh Green livery, hydraulically-operated hood, bespoke dashboard/door cappings (covered in Dark Green leather) and radio telephone. The latter allowed him to speak directly to Buckingham Palace via a unique Admiralty frequency and Pye relay station up on the Hampstead hills.... the Daily Sketch told its readers:'The Duke takes a keen delight in making surprise calls to the Queen - sometimes he disguises his voice when speaking to Charles and Anne'.

The Lagonda also undertook official duties (hence the pennant mount in its nearside front wing) with trips to Aberdeen and Melbourne, Australia as part of the Duke's 1956-57 Tour of the Commonwealth. It was driven by both HRH and his chauffeur Walter Bennett during the 1956 Melbourne Olympics where it was allocated its own '101' number plate and pennant

According to its accompanying copy Build Sheet and Service Records (the former recording HRH, The Duke of Edinburgh as the purchaser), chassis LB/290/31 was treated to sometimes weekly maintenance by the factory with engineers being dispatched to the Royal Mews and Windsor Castle. As well as tailoring the pedals to the Duke's preferences, converting the gearchange to a centre floor shift and installing the radio telephone, the records note the fitting of an additional mirror to the nearside which is rumoured to have been used by the Queen to adjust her hats and remains in situ today (whereas the radio telephone was removed when the Duke sold the car presumably to prevent any unwanted calls to the Palace). Aston Martin Lagonda dispatched its chief service engineer Tony Tocock to look after the car during its Australian sojourn, while Dunlop wrote to the Royal Mews to assure them that its Antipodean stockists would all carry a set of correct tyres. Aston Martin Lagonda were subsequently granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment to the Duke , while his example inspired purchases from the likes of King Baudouin of Belgium, King Hussein of Jordan and Prince Bertil of Sweden. After 7 years and 35,000 miles, the Duke replaced the Lagonda with an Alvis TD21 Drophead Coupe, and it was re-registered from 'OXR 1' to 'XYX 3' and disposed of via Car Mart Sales Ltd (another DoE warrant holder).

Just for info, some Royal personal plates:

" Queen Elizabeth owns A7, originally issued by London Council in 1903. A1 was the first number issued in London and was picked up by Earl Russell, who camped outside the registering offices to secure it. Other Royal registration owners included the Queen Mother who owned NLT 2 and HRH Prince Philip who has OXR 1. Princess Margaret owned 3 GXM whilst YR 11 is the Duke of Kent's personal number plate. Princess Anne once owned 1 ANN but gave it up for security reasons." - from http://www.regplates.com/cherished-number-plate.html

Very expensive 1:43 white metal model of OXR 1 announced from new Royal Collection series

"The first release will be Prince Philip’s 1954 Lagonda 3 litre drophead coupe, complete with the extra rear aerial for the his radio telephone, which he used to prank a young Prince Charles by disguising his voice. The extra vanity mirror at the top of the passenger’s side of the windscreen installed so that the Queen could check she looked suitably regal is another nice touch. The other four currently confirmed cars are Prince Charles’s Aston Martin DB6 Volante, Prince Philip’s Triplex Ogle GTS, the Jaguar E-Type Zero that Prince Harry drove after marrying Meghan, and the Royal Estate’s Ford V8 Pilot ‘woody’ shooting brake. The series will be limited to just 100 pieces per subject."
