Skid ◊ 2007-10-13 19:34	I read Brock Yates' book "Cannonball" not long ago, and he talked a lot about the filming of this movie. He never said anything about a stunt person dying, but during the scene where the Aston fills with smoke and starts weaving through oncoming cars, the stunt driver in the oncoming vehicle (apparently not realizing that the driver of the Aston was driving blind) crashed head-on into it. The stuntwoman playing "Bond's" passenger in the Aston Martin was critically injured, and ended up successfully suing director Hal Needham.

I don't buy it as if you pay close attention, there was more than one Aston Martin used to film the movie. Pay close attention to the close up shots as the interior changes a little and the windshield wipers not only change model, by the direction they wipe. That leads me to believe that there was likely a right hand drive car used to fill in after the crash and they flipped the image to make it appear to be a left hand drive car.

Not really - I think the idea was that the Seymour character had delusions of being Bond by virtue of the car, and having Connery play the character would have spoilt the joke a little. Besides, I don't think Connery does jokes - with the possible exception of the Never Say Never Again film...

The fact he has his own tune every time the DB5 is feautured in the movie says something about both his and the car... is it a Bond-DB5 or a normal one fittet with some options for the movie? (EG the rotating licence plates?)

Not only did the car switch from being RHD to reverse-film LHD, but the LHD car has a different hood scoop - in short, the second car used to replace the damaged DB-5 is a DB-5 with the hood of a pre-Series-IV DB-4 (or a Series 5 DB4 Vantage with an earlier DB-4 hood). According to most sources, DP/2161/1 - the Bond gadget vehicle - was used in the movie as the vehicle with the roof hatch and the (faux) interior gadgets. At least one source suggests it was DB5/1486/R. Could be that both cars made a re-appearance here, plus the third vehicle with with DB-4 hood. -Kurt -- Last edit: 2012-02-20 05:45:03
troubadour ◊ 2012-03-03 00:29	According to IMDB trivia (not that it's trivial for the lady, obviously), the lady who was a stuntwoman, Heidi something-or-other, was left a paraplegic as a result of an accident involving the Aston Martin. The driver of the car, and the car itself, escaped major damage, which suggests she was elsewhere when the accident took place. However, it is recorded (in Roger Moore's memoirs) that one of the reasons he declined to appear in the second movie was because of the accident - another reason being that he thought the joke could only go so far. As for the car itself, it was DP216/1 which appeared in the film, at least for some shots. The numberplate, 6633PP, proclaims it as such. Of course, it is highly likely that other cars were also used; common folklore has it that the extra car was needed for the James Bond film because with all the extra equipment the car became unwieldy and unsuitable for high-speed driving. But the gadgets used in Cannonball are not as they were in Bond, because after the film it was returned to normal (and the number changed from BMT 216A) and sold into private hands. The gadgets were only built to last the duration of the filming in any case. But once in private hands, the gadgets (or a facsimile of them) were restored to the car in a more durable form, and remained with the car at least until its last known location. In the later part of the 80s, the car was auctioned and sold for, I believe, $100,000; unfortunately, more recently it was stolen from an aircraft hangar in Florida where it was being stored, and is now missing...

The stuntwoman paralyzed in the accident was Heidi von Beltz: There don't seem to be any images of the accident online, but I found an old VHS tape I recorded 30-some years ago from KNBC Channel 4 in Los Angeles. Unfortunately the quality is rather poor but you can see what went wrong. The Aston Martin is on the far side of the road, and in the take they used, both the maroon 1979 Chevy station wagon and a red-and-white Ford Club Wagon pass it on the near side. In the take that resulted in the accident, the Aston passes the wagon OK: But for some reason the Club Wagon turns to the right, into the path of the Aston: Closer angle: The worst part? lobo ◊ 2021-02-09 11:58	BMT216A chassis no DP/216/1 was the original Goldfinger gadget car. The gadgets were stripped off BMT216A by Aston Martin in 1968 and fake ones later fitted by new owner. BMT216A was re-registered 6633PP. BMT216A(6633PP) is the Cannonball Run car. They used a second car: The back up car with the ejector seat/stunt car was a DB4GT that was crashed out in a bad accident during filming.
