According to my data, B210DA is a 1948 Bentley Mk VI originally registered DVH 935 and converted into a single seat racer by an unknown (to me) builder. There is obviously some error or unknown transfer of VIN here. On these cars the VIN is shown on an engraved plate attached to the scuttle by rivets. It is also etched into the chassis but may not be easily seen with the body in place. On my somewhat newer car the VIN is etched on the top of the near side chassis rail close to the starter motor. If chassis B210DA was used to make a special, it is possible that the body, bearing the inscription plate engraved with B210DA was transferred to another chassis, and someone who didn't know much about Bentleys of that era thought it was correct. -- Last edit: 2017-06-12 21:58:21 |

The racer existed in 2015, re-registered as 1 BLE. It belongs to a Bentley Drivers Club member, and is described as a Mk VI Special in the 2015 members list and has chassis no B210DA. If the car is used in races, the scrutineers will check the engraved chassis number against the entry form details, so my contention is that chassis B210DA still lives in England. What we might be seeing in the picture is Body No. 2010, as originally supplied on chassis B210DA, still carrying the inscription plate for that chassis, but sitting on another chassis. Body No 2010 is a 1948 Bentley Motors Standard Steel Saloon originally two tone green and black, as supplied to Dr. W. Moir Shepherd in October of that year. I have never seen 1 BLE, but generally, when these cars are made into specials, the chassis is "cut and shut", as the saloon car proportions are not appropriate for a racer. The driver needs to be closer to the back axle and the engine needs to be further back in relation to the front wheels. This means very major, and probably irreversible, surgery to the chassis longitudinal rails, and repositioning of the cruciform brace situated behind the gearbox to a position further towards the rear of the chassis. If we hadn't known it still existed, we could still be 90% confident that it hadn't been converted back into a saloon. -- Last edit: 2017-06-12 22:34:07 |

DVH 935 now on a 2014 Audi Q5 since June 2016 (originally VE64NOH), 1 BLE on a 2012 MINI Countryman One D since Aug 2013 (originally YF12JCU). Having now seen the thumb with the girl in it, the appearance of the car in the picture is undoubtedly that of a Mk VI Bentley with the Standard Steel Saloon body even down to a drooping door handle, but we are unable to nominate the chassis number. The special uses the Mk VI front suspension components, I have skinned my knuckles on many occasions on items closely resembling those. -- Last edit: 2017-06-13 08:57:38 |
