Mercury? This name appears to be appropriate for the two axle long wheelbase subject vehicle, but there were also short wheelbase tippers and tractor versions. |

Yes I think the only 4 wheel rigid AEC Ergo cabbed model was Mercury. A very good truck from accounts , shame AEC didn't turn into the British equivalent of Scania ! |

AEC built premium vehicles and continued so to do until falling foul of the wrecking ball called British Leyland. The Mandator saga is probably excusable due to circumstance and then boardroom jealousies put an end to the firm. Unlike the original firm of Leyland, AEC's logo was never seen on lightweight junk and therefore did not get devalued in the customer's eyes as did the Lancashire product, so instead Southall got strangled. As you say, it could have been a different story. |
