Could we make a mass change for all 2005 B6s to be MY 2006? This episode was filmed February 15 - March 18, 2005, so brand spanking new as dhill says.

Must we?? If car makers want to create stupid fantasy mys, that's their problem. Let's stay in the real world, where it's simple.

Unfortunately, we're in the real world with all its proof:

Volkswagen has always used model years as far back as I can see. Most manufacturers, if not all, use them. Not all use the 10th digit either as the MY. Certain countries do not adhere to MY standards.

Based off the VINs pulled and prior research done this is an Early 2006 MY. Heck we found a few Mercedes with really early MYs too. I even vaguely remember gamer doing research on an old Taurus coming out February for the next MY.

But it's demonstrably a 2005 car. imcdb continually throws up the dangers of blindly following any single strand of evidence to the exclusion of others - whether it's VINs, plate info, or whatever else - because it takes us into absurd positions where we look stupid. Our skill should be to present balanced assessments which make sense for a general audience, which is conceptually at least the purpose behind the database.

I've got no real interest in Passats so don't intend to die in a ditch for this example, but do strongly believe that if we really want to tell everybody the sky is green, we have to be very very careful and deliberate in our choices of when to take such extreme stances, and it definitely should not be a casual default.

I shall remain in the days when the chassis numbers were handed, having been written on parchment, to a man in a cow gown whose job was to punch the numbers just to the right of where the starting handle went through the front crossmember. Its easier.

Same. I'd rather go with the first registration (and chassis in case of late registration) since that's the gold standard in my country... Unfortunately we don't have a DVLA or Carfax-like system so it's near impossible to find them out barring a few exceptions.

Unlike the US no manufacturer in Europe advertises models with 'MY' (production+1) especially months before the year ends! People (even car nuts) at opposite sides of the Atlantic perceive it differently when they hear 'an '06 VW'.

Just going to leave these two links here: https://www.clubvw.org.au/vwreference/vwvin/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Passat

Quote The B6 debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2005, and launched in Europe in the summer of 2005 for the 2006 model year.

Seems VW loaned this one to the filming company as these were not officially sold to the public until the Summer of 2005 in EU. Doesn't fit the 'Pre-production' moniker just seems to be one of the first off the assembly line.

Just a thought, but can we be sure the filming date info is accurate? Seems weird that they had the car before the motor show.

I was the one who added it. I got it from here: https://www.filmportal.de/film/atemnot_397bf4cfed1e490499d51ffe9900393f

There's half-melted snow on the highways, so I'd say late winter/early spring is correct.
