10th digit Y usually means MY 2000. Was it sitting unsold for nearly three years so they had to donate it for a raffle? ![]() |

I noticed that, too - however I'm not sure the Y denotes the actual year. These were made from late 1999-2002, and many have W (1998) in their VIN. Somewhere between serial number 1300 and 1400 the 10th digit changes from W to Y. It would seem strange to skip X (1999) altogether. It's possible the chassises were assembled first and thus stamped with the year prior to the bodies being mounted onto them. According to this old article, the chassises are made in Denmark, the frames in Norway, the suspension, brakes and steering rack by Peugeot, the engine by Siemens and the battery by SAFT. Such a complicated production process is bound to have some discrepancies, especially if the parts were stockpiled for later assembly. There were hopes that 5000 would be made each year back then, but the factory only had the capacity to make around 800 each year. So the W- and Y-stamped chassises are probably from two separate orders. |
