This scene was an reenactment of the Bloody Sunday March that occurred during the First Selma to Montgomery March at the end of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama on the morning of the 7th March 1965.

As their protesters crossed the other side of the bridge, they were met with a wall of Alabama State Police officers and when they refused to disband, the officers (some on horseback) started to shove the protesters to the ground and brutally beating them with nightsticks.

The Bloody Sunday Attack resulted in 17 hospitalized for major injuries and 50 treated for minor injuries.

The attacks were later televised all over the US and around the world and led US President Lyndon B Johnson to send the bill for Voting Rights through Congress a week later on the 15th March 1965.
