T1 is (more or less) correct, but you are right, too. T1 stands for Transporter 1 (one as in first generation). The successors are therefore called T2, T3, T4 and today we have T5. This nomenclature is somewhat like Mark I (Mk.I), Series I, etc. Typ 2 on the other hand means that the transporter was the second type model Volkswagen started. Typ 1 is the car which is better known as "Käfer" or "Beetle". The official name in those days was, and there you are right, "Volkswagen Typ 2". But as today no one really understands this and even the clubs use the T names we should keep it as "Volkswagen T1". PS: VW is just an initialism, just like RR for Rolls-Royce or MB for Mercedes-Benz. The company's name is Volkswagen. |
