That appears to be a remote controlled mirror mounted on the driver’s door. This was an optional extra on all Escorts until it became a standard fitting on the 1977 Ghia. I have a 1975 Escort L with the same mirror, (plus vinyl roof and a whole host of other factory fitted extras). Many owners were still opting for wing mounted mirrors but mine was a Ford demonstrator so I guess GVW 604N was one too. A side by side comparison of my 1975 mirror and those fitted to the later Ghia shows it to be a different casting but the internal control lever is near enough the same.
