This scene was an reenactment of the murder of Gambino Capo, Edward Lino who was shot nine times as he was sitting in his Mercedes Benz S Class by corrupt NYPD Detectives, Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa under order of Lucchese Crime Family Underboss, Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso under the guise of a traffic stop on the Belt Parkway near Brighton Beach, New York on the night of the 6th November 1990. The two killers, Eppolito and Caracappa were commonly referred as the "Mafia Cops" as they were involved in a number of criminal activities committed on behalf of the Lucchese and the Gambino Mobs while assigned to the NYPD Major Case Squad Organized Crime Homicide Unit based in Brooklyn. Caracappa had been a detective in the NYPD Organized Crime Unit since the 1970s, while his partner, Eppolito had ties to the American Mafia and the Gambino Crime Family as his father, Ralph Eppolito, his uncle, James "Jimmy the Clam" Eppolito and his cousin, James "Jim-Jim" Eppolito Jr were all made men in Gambino Mob while his grandfather was an associate of gangster and the "founding father of the Modern American Mafia", Charles "Lucky" Luciano. Louis Eppolito joined the NYPD in 1969 after falsely stating on his application to the NYPD of not being related to any Mafia figures, in 1977 he rose to the rank of detective where his career made the newspapers. Both James and James Eppolito Jr were both members of Gambino Capo, Anthony "Nino" Gaggi's Crew until they were shot and killed by both Gaggi and Gambino hitman, Roy DeMeo as they were sitting in James Jr's 1978 Ford Thunderbird on the side of the road in Coney Island on the night of the 1st October 1979 in which Louis Eppolito was the investigating detective on the murders. A investigation into the murders of James and James Jr revealed that prior the murders in late 1979, James Eppolito Sr had met with the head of the Gambino Mob, Paul Castellano and informed Castellano that James Jr, Gaggi and DeMeo was involved in the drug trade, one of the criminal activities that all members of the mafia are prohibited under the American Mafia's unwritten laws and had accused Gaggi and DeMeo cheating James Jr $7,000 from a cocaine deal. Eppolito Sr also accused Gaggi of being police informant and infringing on James Sr's territory and had asked Castellano for permission to kill Gaggi and DeMeo. Gaggi and DeMeo's involvement in the drug trade would've resulted in both DeMeo and Gaggi's murders, but Castellano being an ally of Gaggi, had broken his own rule and sided with both Gaggi and DeMeo against James Sr and gave permission to both Gaggi and DeMeo to murder both James Sr and James Jr. A witness driving past James Jr's vehicle at the moment the shots were fired, managed to alert a nearby police officer who arrested Gaggi nearby after getting in shootout with Gaggi that resulted in Gaggi receiving a bullet wound to the neck while DeMeo who had already left the scene, managed to getaway and was unable to be identified by the witness. Gaggi had survived his wound and was charged with the murders and the attempted murder of a police officer, but after jury tampering, was convicted of assault and was sentenced to a 5 to 15-year sentence in a federal prison. Shortly after Gaggi was sentenced, the witness who saw the murders of James Sr and James Jr was later shot and killed by DeMeo in March 1980. In early 1983, Eppolito was suspected of leaking the files of police investigations carried out by NYPD Organized Crime Unit, which included the names of the informants who were providing information to the Organized Crime Unit. According to Casso, Caracappa and Eppolito begun working for the Lucchese Mob in 1985 and had being involved in various criminal activities from enforcers to carrying out contract killings of rival criminal figures and suspected informants. Caracappa and Eppolito had been named for being involved or had committed several other murders and disappearances: Israel Greenwald - Diamond dealer, was named as a informant in a federal investigation over stolen treasury bonds that Greenwald had unknowingly deposited, abducted after leaving his family home in Far Rockaway, Queens for work on the morning of the 10th February 1986, it was suspected that Eppolito and Caracappa killed Greenwald under orders of Casso's associate, Burton Kaplan who was suspected of being linked to the stolen treasury bonds. James Hydell - Known as Jimmy, Associate of the Gambino Mob, was named for the attempted murder of Casso, abducted in May 1986, it was believed that Caracappa and Eppolito took Hydell to Casso's home where he was tortured and executed by Casso, Hydell's body was never found. Nicholas Guido - Telephone installer, was mistaken for Gambino associate, Nicky Guido (who Hydell named as one of the men involved in Casso's attempted murder), shot by hitmen as he were sitting in his new sports car outside his house in Park Slope, Brooklyn on the morning of 25th December 1986. Despite the murder of an innocent man, Casso had continued to look for those responsible and continued to pay Eppolito and Caracappa a weekly payment of $4,000 with bonus payments for committing murders. Anthony DiLapi - Member of the Lucchese Mob, bookmaker and associate of Carlos Gambino's son, Thomas Gambino, ran one of the racketeering operations in New York's Garment District for the head of the Lucchese Mob, Antonio "Tony Ducks" Corallo, shot in the underground garage of his apartment building in Hollywood, California on the night of the 4th February 1990. It was believed that after he was released from prison after serving ten years for conspiracy and obstruction of justice after stopping a union's organisation drive for a Garment District trucking company, DiLapi had failed to show up at a meeting with Casso and had attempted to leave the Lucchese Mob and his life of crime for a fresh start, but was tracked by Caracappa and Eppolito. Bruno Facciolo - Member of the Lucchese Mob, brother of Gambino associate, Louis Facciolo and chef, was suspected of being involved in murder of Lucchese Mob associate, Thomas DeSimone on the 14th January 1979, shot by the Acting Boss of the Lucchese Mob, Louis Daidone in Daidone's garage at Bensonhurst, Brooklyn in August 1990. It was believed that Facciolo was named by Caracappa and Eppolito as a police informer and was lured by Caracappa and Eppolito to Daidone's garage where Daidone shot Facciolo, Facciolo's body was found in the boot of a car in Brooklyn with a dead canary stuffed in his mouth (A Mob sign for a informer). Bartholomew Boriello - Known as Bobby, Gambino hitman and bodyguard of John Gotti, was a soldier in John Gotti Jr's crew and was named in the murder of Gambino soldier, Louis DiBono who was shot and placed in the boot of DiBono's 1987 Cadillac Deville in the underground car park of the former World Trade Centre on the afternoon of the 4th October 1990, shot by the Lucchese Captain, Frank Lastorino as he stepped out of his Lincoln Town Car outside his home on Bay 29th Street in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn on the night of the 13th April 1991. It was believed that Boriello was named by Caracappa and Eppolito as being the shooter who attempted to kill Gambino Mob associate, Preston Geritano who had family in the Genovese Mob who swore retaliation. -- Last edit: 2023-11-18 14:39:48 |
