1967 Tempest Custom with LeMans/GTO style interior upholstery - not sure if that was a factory option or upgraded at a later date.

Hi. I know this is an old post, but I used to own this car.

This was my husband's pride and joy- he did most of the restoration work on it, and after he passed away quite unexpectedly, I kept it for a few years, but then it was too sad to drive and see it in the garage every day, and I was also concerned our son would sneak it out when he turned 16 and crash/seriously hurt himself in it. I sold it to an owner of a Ford dealership here in Utah who was a car collector back in 2015. A few months ago I received a phone call from a gentleman in New Jersey who found my name in the car paperwork, and said he had recently purchased it from someone local in New Jersey, and he was asking me how it ended up in a movie filmed outside Las Vegas. I still have no idea how that happened, or how it ended up in New Jersey, so I started researching!

As a strange aside, I received the phone call from the current owner in New Jersey while I was at the DMV on our son's 16th birthday literally signing the paperwork for him to receive his driver's license.

So if anyone cares, the story is that we purchased it from the original owner up in Michigan in 1999 or 2000. It had lived at their summer house in Ludington (I think?) and was only driven to the grocery store. My husband decided to restore and convert it into a GTO clone. It had the standard Tempest/LeMans all red interior, and was an automatic with a bench seat in the front. Those front bucket seats you see now came out of a 67 Firebird. He found them on eBay, and they were shipped to us via Greyhound. He tore the transmission and bench seat out and converted it to a manual (Hurst shifter) with a bigger engine/more powerful brake system, and reupholstered the entire car in the pearl white, and put a new top on to match. The rims are Cragars I think (?) that our local mechanic in Virginia was selling super cheap, and they fit, so a deal was made. We lived in Virginia when most of the restoration was done- you can see an Antique CONV Virginia license plate if you look carefully. We found that at a flea market, and since it was not active in the Virginia DMV system, they allowed us to register it as a permanent plate for the car, but I never expected that it would be kept after changing hands a few times. The GTO grille and badges were still in the garage when my husband passed away. It was the last thing he was going to do to complete the restoration/conversion.

This car absolutely smoked anything on the road. It was amazing, and I thank you for including it on this website! Our son is now 16, and I will show him this someday. I can't tell you how much I wish my husband was still here to see this.

Nice! Thanks for sharing the story. It's always interesting to hear the backstory of a special car.

Thanks! It is such an unusual story, I thought someone out there might find it interesting. So glad you did!
