This scene was an reenactment of the murder of traveling salesman; Merle Collison who was shot by Starkweather after being pulled out of his car near Douglas, Wyoming on the morning of the 29th Jaunuary 1958. In the original case, after the murders of the Wards and their maid, Starkweather and Fugate were driving the Wards' black Packard stolen filled with a suitcase of jewellery stolen from the Wards' house when they heard over the radio that their stolen Packard had been identified by the police. Needing a new car, Starkweather and Fugate drove across the state border into Wyoming where they spotted Collison's Buick parked on the side of the road where Collison was asleep in the car, after getting out of the Packard and running up to the Buick, Starkweather pulled Collison out of the Buick, awaking him and shooting him dead. After killing Collison, Starkweather got into the Buick and tried to drive off but the Buick had a parking brake engaged (something that Starkweather wasn't familiar with) and stall as the brake wasn't released. As Starkweather tried to restart the Buick, a passing motorist had stop to help but Starkweather threaten the motorist with the rifle on the motorist, resulting in a altercation, during which, a deputy sheriff had pulled up. Fugate ran to deputy sheriff and told him that she was kidnapped, Starkweather got back into the Packard and took off, resulting in a high speed chase, reaching up to speeds of 120 MPH (193 Km/h) where shots were fired in which a round fired by the officers had shattered the Packard's windshield, cutting Starkweather with flying glass from the windshield, causing him to stop. -- Last edit: 2020-09-18 15:00:02 |
