![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We've identified this vehicle using the details you provided AUSTIN MORRIS MAXI 1750 1980 Registration number: VMA 456W Body type: 5 Door Hatchback Colour: Red Date of first registration: August 1980 ✗ Untaxed Tax due: 01 October 1998 (so died in a blaze of glory for filming) MOT No details held by DVLA Vehicle make: AUSTIN MORRIS Date of first registration: August 1980 Year of manufacture: 1980 Cylinder capacity (cc): 1748 cc Fuel type: PETROL Export marker: No Vehicle status: Not taxed Vehicle colour: RED Never seen an AUSTIN MORRIS Maxi before. There's some witchcraft going on with the rear badging, so either 2 cars or maybe just one car with different tailgates during the sequences. This Maxi was nominated in forum thread, triggering the inclusion of this series in the database. |

Two cars for sure; The running car has larger taillights as well as 05/79 rear fog and badges Name was Maxi without Austin by then? Guess it's much like the Range Rover |

Early Maxis were Austins, later ones were Leyland cars and the last ones were Austin Morris. You can use these three cars as examples on DVLA checker :- MWC 821P WOD 389S FKE 467V -- Last edit: 2018-12-21 02:51:05 |

Not sure about any different sized tail-lights either onscreen or any change listed by Glass's. Also as far as I can tell, the silly glass roof is present throughout, which suggests only one car as these were not factory fits. |

Tail lights were the same through out production. |

@dsl, @keef - could you please check this NOS taillight for sale on ebay. Link to "www.ebay.co.uk" It has a compatibility check further down the page, indicating there was a change for the 1980 Maxi II, but it doesn't state what was different If genuine, there should be more info available, I agree -- Last edit: 2018-12-21 08:55:19 |

Is there some confusion here between the Austin Maxi Mark II and the Maxi 2? http://classiccars.brightwells.com/viewdetails.php?id=5015 -- Last edit: 2018-12-21 09:55:02 |

Wouldn't that change then be a couple of years too early? |

Possibly. |

Maxi 2 launched August 1980, dropped July 81. So VMA 456W was registered as the Maxi 2 was being launched, and there would (or should) have been very few W-plate Maxi Mk.IIs, only Maxi 2s. jfs link to a Maxi 2 (EKS 40X) was registered in April 82, so very much an unwanted showroom orphan by that stage. The last Maxi made was LOV 476X, registered in Sept 81 and is displayed at the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, Gaydon - Link to "upload.wikimedia.org" . |

Both my Dad, (PRF321L) and I (RAC897R) had Maxi 1750 Mk IIs, mine being auto. Dad’s had a short career because Mum couldn’t get her head around the five speed box, mine because I got a good deal on a Granada Estate which suited my needs better. However, they were useful, quiet and comfortable cars, although mine was a bit slow away from the lights as the slushpump got hold. The main memory is of how quiet the E-Series engine was on tickover and until it was pushed quite hard. Neither car used any oil between changes, a revelation to those used to the B-Series in the older BMC cars. Another typical BMC cock-up, however, a sound basic design of vehicle being ruined by too early release to the marketplace, no charisma and then no product development apart from some fiddling around the edges. In the period of time during which the Maxi was on sale Ford had produced the Cortina in Mk 2, 3, 4, and 5 and were well down the road to the release of the Sierra not that long after the Maxi was deleted. -- Last edit: 2018-12-22 09:06:46 |

ORK965W (https://www.flickr.com/photos/hk11_yah/27993459559/) is possibly the latest surviving pre-Maxi2 (registered Sept 1980). A month after VMA456W. KOG893W (https://www.flickr.com/photos/hk11_yah/51298320029/) was registered in June 1981, a month before the end of production of the Maxi2 on a W plate. Most Maxi2s would have had an X plate. -- Last edit: 2024-04-07 00:49:43 |
