late 60s or early 70s W108/W109 because of headrests, note North American spec headlights, this could be a 280 SEL 4.5, a 300SEL or 300SEL 6.3 -- Last edit: 2007-08-17 21:07:39 |

you can't see from this angle wether it's a long version "L", a "300" or any of the "V8's" (4.5 or 6.9), so I would keep it at 280SE [W108] |

The presence of the headrests shows that this is a 1969, 1970 or 1971 model. At that time, compliance with emission control requirement began to take its toll on engine output and the performance capability of the six cylindered S class was simply not adequate for it to compete in the luxury class, especially in North America. Mercedes introduced the 3.5 liter V8(280SE and SEL 3.5s) and the 4.5 V8 in 1970 and in 1971 respectively. Due to the more stringent emission regulation in North America, the 4.5 litres were imported to the US earlier than it was made available in Europe. But it was badged as a 3.5, just so that the Europeans and the American names remain identical. By then most Americans who could afford an S class would have opted for a V8 and the L version because the price differential were no longer as significant. I therefore think that we are more likely to be corect if we were to call this a 280SE 4.5 or 280SEL 4.5(w108) |
