The higher-end H-bodies such as Skyhawk and Starfire were popular because it allowed buyers to drive an expensive import that not only was touted as a "mini Camaro" but was also good on gas and had smaller engines, thus avoiding higher taxes associated with the more typical American fullsize cars that cost much to import and were seen as a status symbol. The pinto-based Ford Mustang II and Cadillac Seville also sold well for similar reasons, offering Japanese buyers a "luxury American Cadillac" or a "sporty American Mustang" at a more wallet-friendly price. Interestingly enough, all YANASE-imported Buick Skyhawks on the site are the same red color. I'm thinking several may have been owned by the studio. |
