Recently, I did some research on Liberty trucks. There were 5 models built: Liberty Standard AA 3/4 tons; 4 x 2 ("Model AA") Liberty Standard A 2 tons; 4 x 2 ("Model A") Liberty Standard B 3 tons; 4 x 2, "Duallie" ("Model B") Liberty Standard C 5 tons; 4 x 3, "Twin Duallie" ("Model C") Production started in November, 1917 (probably Model C). Most trucks were of the Model B specification; that model was launched in April, 1918. 15 truck manufacturers, and a bulk of suppliers, were involved in the program. ASAF, all had wooden artillery wheels (no wheel discs), and open cabins without doors. Many trucks built in this period (and well into the 1920s) looked very similar. Although, it is possible that the trucks in the movie indeed were built as Libetys, and became rebuilt later. This was commercially done by several coachbuilders, and even by companies that were doing this on by buying army surplus stock. Such comüpanies were, for example, Belgian Willeme, and British Peerless Lorry (named after the better known US manufactuirer, who built most Liberty trucks). |
