I do not know if it is a Chrysler LeBaron or a Dodge Lancer... or both :D
Johnny 5 identifies the car as a Chrysler LeBaron. It has a Chrysler radio (see pic below) but in a scene a part of a label is visible: "Lanc", which would indicate that it is a Dodge Lancer.
Actually they may have used both car since there are some continuity errors: one of the headlights is sometimes broken sometimes intact, as you can see on the pictures below (in chronological order)

Notice how the license plates often changes.

First it has a registration platen, written "BLA 581" on it.

Then all of a sudden...the plate is changed to "BAD 657".

Just wondering: Did Chrysler sponsor this movie?

I mean, the Chrysler LeBaron GTS (the sedan/notchback version was called the "LeBaron GTS") or Dodge Lancer was a very new car about the time (it was launched in 1985). And I don't think the producers would deliberatly destroy such a new car (back then, it was a modern car :D).

It is actually a Dodge Lancer.

It has the four piece Dodge grille, and in this photograph you can see the start of the "Lancer" badge:

That doesn't surprise me seeing as Dodge is part of the Chrysler group. They obviously used the same radios between brands. :)

Quote from the IMDB: "Factual errors: The white "Chrysler LeBaron" the bad guys drive is actually a Dodge Lancer."

"Continuity: The low-beam passenger side headlight is smashed, but later repaired, after the LeBarron strikes Number 5 and chases him."

Note that the antenna is also suddenly attached at the same time of the headlight repair.

As part of the Chrysler group, all radios used in Dodges, Plymouths, etc... of this era said Chrysler. That radio/casette was used in 1987 (I know, I had to track one down for my Dodge!) I thought they weren't used after 87, but I could be wrong.

It's not a 1988 though, vented hood and high mounted rear brake light make it either an '86 or '87. I don't think the eggshell wheels were out in '86, so I'd lean towards it being an '87.

It looks a bit like a Ford Escort.

Because of the notchback shape.

I noticed from when I was a little kid that it was called a LeBaron in dialog, but had an obvious Lancer badge on the rear tailgate. However, after seeing this movie again recently as an adult, I noted it was definitely filmed in Toronto, Canada. They tried hard to suggest it was set in New York City, but never specifically stated the fact. Being an American city is rather central to the story as becoming naturalized American citizens was a key plot point.

I mention this because I can think of several models produced by Chrysler that were called one name in the USA and, for various reasons, sold under a different model name in the Canadian market. Ford and GM have followed this practice as well. So could this practice possibly be responsible for our LeBaron vs Lancer controversy? I’ve also seen that brand new or heavily restyled platforms can debut in the USA a year before they hit the Canadian market.

Anybody have any input on this? With few exceptions, all Chrysler products in the 1980s were nothing but badge engineered K-cars. If they underwent a styling facelift around this time, perhaps the Lancer was the only car available in Canada with the more modern lines.
