The scene was based on the real detainment of Don Shirley and Tony Lip by the local police in Mississippi. In reality, the incident occurred during Shirley's second tour in November 1963, days before JFK's assassination. The incident occurred after one of the officers who stopped them had insulted Lip by calling him a derogatory name for Italians, resulting in Lip punching the officer and resulting in Lip and Shirley being detained for assault. Like in the scene, both Lip and Shirley were released without charge after Shirley rang JFK's brother and US Attorney General, Robert F Kennedy who in turn, put pressure on the Mississippi State Governor at the time, Ross Barnett for Shirley and Lip's release. |
