It's a circa 1964 AC Invacar Type 57 - an invalid carriage!

Here is a nice page about those Invacars.

http://www.virtualgaz.co.uk/invacarpage.htm

I remember seeing lots of those in the late 70's and early 80's, but by now all have vanished from the streets. They were Government owned and became illegal in 2003.

Interesting site indeed...in France there are many tiny cars looking like (but 4 wheels) such as AIXAM, LIGIER.;etc.. no need licence for driving it...are they permitted for use on the british roads? I've never seen any in England..

The Ligier, Aixam, and Microcar vehicles are UK legal, and they are sold here. They only sell in very small numbers though as their appeal is limited.

The Invacar was purpose built for disabled people. Even when I was growing up in the early 1990s there were still a fair few on the roads but they have indeed all disappeared now.

I have an especially fond memory of this car.

In the late 70`s my uncle came down from Leeds to London[200 miles]for a long weekend in 1 of these with his wife AND 2 teenage sons AND theyre luggage AND a Raleigh Budgie bike, a present for me when I was a kid. & yes, they are 1 seaters & have a boot big enough for a couple of carrier bags!!!!

How they managed it I`ll never know, God bless em!

Thanks uncle Sid & aunty Norma! thanks to you I learned how to ride a bike with no stabilisers!

Are you sure it was an Invacar and not a Petite, which was *slightly* bigger? In an Invacar it would have been impossible.

It was the slightly squarer later version, I think it was a 76 P reg model, it would have been around 1978

Its a Petite

No it isn't. The Petite was bigger, had a much deeper shroud over the rear wheels and had a rear quarter window. This is an Invacar.
