a sad story.....in the year 2009 the UK introduced a "scrappage scheme" where owners of cars which had been in their posession for at least 1 year with full tax and valid mot could be traded in to the value of £2,000 (no matter what vehicle), against a new car, in order to boost the UK car economy.....bad idea...this saw many classic cars being crushed..as cars which were traded in could not be re sold or stripped for spares, they had to be crushed......the following true story was told to me on 11 Oct....about 4 months ago at a classic car rally in Scotland, someone was exhibiting a mint MGBGT.....4 months later he traded it in on this scrappage scheme...before he traded it he took a hammer and dented every body panel...so the dealer couldnt strip the car for spares!!. |

So this MGB wasn't worth more than 2000 Pounds? Very galling, this story, but these are the "colatteral damages" of such scrapping bonuses. The pattern for this British "scrappage schme" was the German "Abwrackprämie". The USA followed with "Cash for Clunkers". As I've heard, other countries have done similar things, so Greece. The "Abwrackprämie" ended some weeks ago, the reserved money (tax money!) was empty. Over 1.2 million cars in Germany were crushed for that. Fortunately not too much classic cars, older than 30 years. Sad, that some classic were destroyed, but not as much, as the classic car-freaks were afraid of. But for sure some hundreds of thousands of the newe wrecked cars (older than January 2000, minimum one year in the owner's hand) had been too good for that - but their value was around 2500 € or less, so it was worth for the owners to wreck them. Some people even have wrecked more valuable cars - the expection of getting government-money, made them blind for the reality, really hysterical. Volkswagen has offered a second wrecking bonus, too, plus 2000 to 3000 €, depending on the new model, you have chose. So if you have decided to buy a VW, you could get a bonus of total max.5500 € - so many cars with this value were crushed, too. -- Last edit: 2009-10-12 08:54:51 |

At least it was a "straw fire", we say in German. Today the German car business is collapsing, much less new cars were sold, up to 50% less of small sized cars. Only the premium segment, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, etc. don't feel it much. But they had no big advantages of the "Abwrackprämie", because mostly small and semi-medium cars were sold. |

Tragic. I bet he traded it for a Kia or a Hyundai or something equally bland and worthless. |

Today I got the new "Oldtimer Markt" with a statistic about the classic cars and youngtimers, which were listed at victims of the Abwrackprämie. It's the official statistic of the responsible German ministery about the first 850 000 carsof total 2 mio wrecked cars, vans and campers - and it's impressively much bullshit written. These informations cannot be correct for sure: - 10x BMW M1: bullshit for sure - 35x BMW 501: same, look at the value and rarity of them. - 58x different NSU: perhaps a few single Prinz 4 or 1200, maybe one RO 80, but not as much - 7x Mercedes 170: probably mixed up with the A 170 - 5x Citroen SM: probably mixed up with the XM - 35x Peugeot 204: I think, there aren't existing that much any more in Germany at all - 29x Audi quattro: for sure no "Ur-Quattro" - 106x Renault 6: from this car are less than 5 registrated in Germany even some years ago - 234x BMW 3.0: perhaps some single wrecks, but not as many like 234 of them - 7x BMW 700: a rare car from the early 60ies, rather mixed up with some 7-Series Even about the 7 wrecked K 70 we aren't sure. The Volvo-freaks have also doubts about the 5 listed PV 544 and the Renault-fans about 12x R 16. But only 17x Renault 4 and 31 VW Golf I, this cannot be correct either. 7x Saab 90 and 181x Saab 9000 could be possible, also 10x Jaguar XJ, 5x Alfa Spider 1.6, 47x Alfa 146, 691x Trabant 601, 136 Trabant 1.1, 9x Rover MGF and 5x Audi 50 - but 5x Audi S6, 11x Audi V8 and 29 A8? IMHO it's more bullshit included this statistics than correct informations. -- Last edit: 2009-10-26 10:38:18 |
