Thanks , that other one is really bugging me . Fire engines are usually very well documented by middle age / old men who like listing things with obsessive detail and displaying their vast useless knowledge, not at all like IMCD of course -- Last edit: 2014-03-26 11:31:15 |

I am a bit surprised UK industry was of the largest in the 60s in terms of cars, bikes trucks, construction vehicles yet by the late 90s nearly all was GONE Yeah the japanese invasion during the 80s was largely to blame but wonder how come the german indsutry survived almost intact by comparison -- Last edit: 2014-03-26 17:08:56 |

Beats me and I cry every day about it , UK government spends billions of taxpayers money every year on foreign trucks and vans for our army, air force , health services , councils, fire brigades, etc etc because they have let all our truck industry go . Up to the early 1980s Government agencies were not allowed to buy foreign vehicles and they did not have to because we made a big range in UK . Bad unions and bad managemment were partly to blame but then the government allowed foreign companies to buy British truck makers and then shut them down . I can think of no incidents of a British maker buying a French , German or Dutch vehicle maker then shutting them down . British workers seem to be expendable , recently the massive original Massey Ferguson tractor factory in Peterborough was closed down and production shifted to the French factory. Could this have happened the other way round ?, no way, French government would not allow it. British taxpayers money now keeping foreign workers in jobs , mad , but too late to put industry back . RANT OVER -- Last edit: 2014-03-26 17:33:38 |

Horizontal slots on the side of the engine cover - quite possibly not Leyland. In JCB's link is similar fire truck, but with different fenders, like this one --> /vehicle.php?id=996907 Better list under the Merryweather make. |

In many cases the British made vehicles weren't up to the job, even when built under under special contracts rather than for the masses. There's quite a good website about old police cars written by an ex-motorway patrol officer who mentions his old force switched to BMws in the 1980s because they couldn't find any British made car up to the rigours of motorway patrols & high speed pursuits. |

I have had my attention drawn to JCB’s comment from 2014, above. Morris bought Leon Bollée in 1924 and abandoned the business in 1931. |
