Its not a Ford Mustang. It’s a 2007 model, Saleen S281 Extreme All Saleen S281 "Extreme"s come from Saleen with a Supercharger as standard equipment. The car in the film is the "Extreme" version of the S281 line, however it was detuned for filming purposes – and as a result the regular 3-Valve V8 was used in the car without the standard Supercharger. http://www.saleen.com/transformers.htm ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Previous main capture: ![]() -- Last edit: 2009-09-28 18:24:18 |

Neptune, please explain why this is not a Mustang. Isn't the Saleen S281 just a modified version? -- Last edit: 2007-09-24 14:25:30 |

Because Saleen is to Ford as RUF is to Porsche. Saleen is a independent company and is not owned by Ford. People look at the outside and (based on it's appearance) automatically say "It’s a Ford Mustang". However, the only thing the Saleen S281 has in common with the Ford Mustang is cosmetic parts. Underneath that cosmetic façade is All Saleen performance parts. There are enough changes made by Saleen to merit the S281 as it's own creation. The S281 is Legally licensed and manufactured by Saleen (Not Ford) Therefore its not a Ford Mustang. -- Last edit: 2007-11-18 19:48:35 |

I think it might be better to replace the main picture with one of the other captures, as they are much better. But yeah, you definitely won't see that slogan on any US police vehicle ![]() |

Neptune, you're blind. That Saleen S281 IS a Mustang, it's only a variant. Other variants include Shelby, Roush & Steeda. Besides, I think you need an upgrade to your brain, because Barricade IS and ALWAYS a Saleen S281 Mustang. And he's a S281E model. |
SnotRodFanatic ◊ 2007-10-12 23:54 |
Barricade: Barricade is a born liar. The greatest thrill in his life is knowing people trust him because of the human decorations on his door panels. The look of betrayal they get is when they realize what they're dealing with is as sweet as candy. The only thing he likes better is chasing down AUTOBOTS and breaking them into pieces with his crushing hands. STRENGTH 8 INTELLIGENCE 5 SPEED 8 ENDURANCE 6 RANK 5 COURAGE 5 FIREPOWER 5 SKILL 4 |
◊ 2007-10-13 00:05 |
And you should upgrade yours to better read other people's post and understand what they mean. |
◊ 2007-10-13 01:59 |
If my brain needs a upgrade, then yours needs a Full Body-Off Restoration. You obviously don’t understand the legal system and who has registered rights to the corresponding vehicle. Ford has nothing to do with the S281, nor does Ford own the rights to the car. The cars themselves may have started life as a Ford Mustang, however once Saleen is done replacing the vehicle’s OE mechanical and cosmetic parts, there is very little of Ford (if any) left in the car. The S281 is more than just a copycat Tuner version of the Mustang. Saleen itself is subject to the exact same federal regulations governing automotive design as GM, Chrysler LLC, Ford and various other manufactures. So as I said earlier, its not a Mustang. -- Last edit: 2007-11-18 20:30:27 |

The DMV lists Saleens as Saleens not Fords. |
◊ 2008-08-20 05:53 |
does anyone know what kind of lightbar was used on Barricade in the movie? I want to create a replica for a display that I am doing of all my favorite movie vehicles on my 200+ acres of property. |
◊ 2008-12-11 17:16 |
While Saleen does have the ownerships and rights to the cars that they modify. The Vin number of each car never changes and therefor the car is registered and titled as a Ford Mustang. Don't believe me go to ebay and run carfax reports on any of the Saleens that they have listed the all come back as Ford Mustangs. |
◊ 2008-12-11 21:51 |
And your point is? Saleen gives each car it’s very own Saleen VIN number (regardless if the car is still registered as it’s former self) Its very much the same with RUF (which start life as a Porsche body) RUF is a RUF, not a Porsche. http://www.ruf-automobile.de/content.php?seite=seiten/modelle_neuwagen.php |
◊ 2008-12-12 02:35 |
my point is that it is a Mustang according to the department of motor vehicles |
◊ 2009-01-17 23:41 |
I can’t help stubborn people, sorry, I wish I could. He is hung up on the fact that the car was first manufactured by Ford (which it was) After Saleen reengineers the car, it is a product of Saleen. A Butterfly starts life as a Caterpillar. But after its transformation, it’s a Butterfly (not a Caterpillar) |

Is Shelby the same as Saleen by making their mustangs their own cars as Saleen does? And i sometimes wonder why Saleen does not do the same to the Ford Crown Victorias by enhancing their performance as they do with the mustangs, cause i love crown vics. |
◊ 2009-01-21 02:13 |
No, unlike Saleen, Shelby is just a variant of the Mustang. Ford SVT and Shelby both designed and manufacture the GT 500. So Ford still has a hand in the production of the GT 500 and also has certain rights for the car, except the Shelby name. |

You failed to mention that a FORD dealership cannot market, order, take delivery, sell, repair or perform scheduled maintenance on a Saleen product unless Saleen "certifies" the dealership first. A Ford dealership that wants to market, sell, etc. a Saleen product must contact Saleen directly to begin the Certification process. It should be noted that Certification is not easy, it is very demanding for a dealership. Not all Ford dealerships get certified. |

Do Saleen makes their own engines rather than using fords 4.6 V8 engine? |
◊ 2009-01-25 18:45 |
Well, yes and no. It depends on the model. The S281 Extreme (also known as S281-E) is one of Saleen’s top-of-line models. Therefore it gets the MVP Saleen treatment. The life of the S281-E begins, like all Saleen production cars, on the floor of the company's 131,000 square foot facility. The new car proceeds down Saleen's assembly line. The car is completely gutted from nose to tail. All Ford parts are removed: Ford OE Transmission and Transmission Assembly – Gone. Ford OE Suspension and Chassis, Shocks, Springs, Control Arms – Gone. Ford OE Brakes and Brake Assembly – Gone. Ford OE Wheels and Tires – Gone. Ford OE Engine and Exhaust System – Gone. Ford OE Air Feed System – Gone. Ford OE Front Clip – Gone. Ford OE Rear Clip and Spoiler – Gone. Ford OE Hood – Gone. Ford Factory Fit & Finish – Gone. Even the factory Ford color is ... Gone. All Saleens are painted in colors developed by BASF. The Ford OE Computer Management System is snatched out and replaced by a Specially Programmed Saleen Computer System. Saleen calls it "PowerFlash". The engines for the S281 Extreme are built in-house under the supervision of Saleen Chief Engineer Neil Hannermann and Engine Department Manager Bill Tally. |

Straight from Saleen, Inc. : The S281E has the original Ford block in it but all the internals of the motor are changed. Also the transmission is changed from the original Ford 5 speed to a Tremec 6 speed transmission. The front struts, springs, rear shock, springs, and front sway bar are changed. As well as interior pieces. The S281 E has a 12 month / 12,000 mile warranty on Saleen components. The vehicle is still titled as a Mustang GT, so that is what you insure it as. |

Neptune, I used to work at a Mazda dealership and the owner declined to go through the dealership certification process to be labeled an official MazdaSpeed dealership. |

If Saleen says these cars are Mustangs then why would DMV title them as something else?? hp and performance mean nothing to DMV. Plenty of cars have different HP take a 4-cyl Mustang LX and a 8-cyl Mustang GT for instance both titles as Mustangs yet hp is way different. DMV cares about VIN# and original Manufacturers thats all. and here are some more Quotes from Saleen's website: "1984- Saleen Autosport formed by racing driver Steve Saleen. The company introduces the first Saleen Mustang." "1996-Steve Saleen is inducted into the Mustang Hall of Fame with Carroll Shelby." "1997-Steve Saleen joins the Board of Directors for the Mustang Museum and Professional Sports Car Racing Inc. Saleen/Allen "RRR" Speedlab competes at 24 Hours of Le Mans, marking the Mustang's first return in over 30 years." "Saleen unveils the 1999 Saleen Mustang S281 and S351, featuring dynamic new design, lower cost and higher level of performance." "2002-Saleen unveils the S281 Extreme, the world’s most powerful (445hp) production Mustang." "Saleen debuts all-new 2005 Saleen Mustang line-up. The S281 3-V obtains 330hp, the Supercharged reaches 435hp, and the Extreme (“E”) achieves 550hp -- the fastest Saleen Mustangs produced to date. " "2006-Saleen debuts the Saleen / Parnelli Jones Limited Edition Mustang -- a 1970 retro-style Parnelli Jones Boss 302 in a contemporary form, revealing 370hp in a 302 cid V-8, 3-valve engine. " WOW for a car that is not supposed to be a Mustang, Saleen sure does call it that a lot. -- Last edit: 2009-02-01 20:03:13 (antp) |

I have to agree with Neptune, Barricade is a Saleen S281 "Extreme" Coupe - also known as the S281-E. Built for the movie with stock (for Saleen) body and running gear, but with a lower-powered engine (S281-E has a 550bhp 281ci/4.6l V8). Ford declined to have the Mustang featured in the movie as they didn't want to be associated with a "bad guy" character, but Saleen had no such issues :-) |

nice saleen or mustang. what ever it is i think it looks awsome! i wish all the police cars were like this saleen! lol |
◊ 2010-08-05 07:54 |
Just to set the record straight, I own one of the actual Barricades from the film and it is titled as a 2005 Mustang, but it was customized by Saleen for the film. I've always refered to it as my Saleen Mustang. So I guess your both right. |
◊ 2011-10-30 16:20 |
All Saleens and Roush are titled at the DMV as Mustang GT´s and the Shelby 500 is titled as "Mustang Shelby GT500" so a Mustang is a Mustang even if it´s a Shelby. |

I know that this posting is old but, I will say that DMVs will always automatically list a car that looks like it's counterpart as the same name. Instead of them lookin' thoroughly to find out the cars true indentification. Besides, most DMV workers are not car experts you know? Commonsense don't you think? -- Last edit: 2011-12-21 22:58:38 |

DMV has no idea what a car looks like, they list the car by the Vehicle Identification Number, which is how the vehicle manufacturer lists the car...that is it, that is all they take into consideration, and that is common sense. |

Speaking of RUF . Yep. I used to play a game call Gran Turismo 2 , on Playstation. When I saw the RUF vehicles on their call "RUF" I said "What a minute, that ain't a RUF that's a Porsche'!" However, I found out the point of RUF being different than Porsche are not exactly the same. Especially Legal wise. The creators of Gran Turismo , wanted Porsche to be in the games. Which Porsche declined. They went to RUF instead, which they , RUF, approved. |
◊ 2021-07-11 16:38 |
Saleen, as mentioned, gives each of their vehicles their OWN Saleen Vin Number. And is Registered as "SALEEN" not "Mustangs". Have you ever heard of RUF ? |
◊ 2023-04-26 21:21 |
Local Diesel Nerd here If a Saleen is a Mustang Is a Freightliner a White? Or is maybe a Western Star a White? Is an RUF a Porsche? Some food for thought |
