Moskvitch 408, first registered November 8, 1975.

It's got a GDR sticker and a Soviet plate...

Older than 1975. I would say 1966 circa.

Well, that was only the registration date, the year was not given.

But it could be 1975, you know how Russian cars evolve much, much slower than European ones... ;)

While the soviet/russian car design part is somewhat true, this particular model has 1965-69 styled tail lights (more specifically MY1969, due to the sidemarker on the C-pillar).

But what's most important here is that it clearly has "Elite" badging below the bootlid (see the thumbnail below, provided by mok), which means it's an export model sold originally in Europe (probably somewhere in Finland, I would say). Therefore it should be renamed to 1969 Moskvitch Elite [408 E]

Just for the record, if you type "Elite 1500 — Москвич 408, 1.3 л., 1969" on google, in the results you get this exact car with the same number plate (although on the main drive2 page, there is no info, just photos):

So, to correct myself, it should be 1969 Moskvitch Elite 1500 [408 E]

:think: Wasn't "Elite" the name only for Western export versions?

So it's meant to be an export model but it just wasn't exported/refused at export or was re-imported.

A re-export is possible, as after the fall of The Wall many Russian cars were re-imported, as they were still popular in Russia (in the former "brother states" they had lost the value).
In Germany also Ladas, sold in West Germany, were picked up and brought back.
:think: but:
a) the Moskvich was never sold in West Germany (except a few dozen cars in the late 60ies)
b) the "Mossi" (DDR-slang) was never named "Elite" in the DDR
c) "Schengen" came in 1993, so before that it was for Red Army officers in the DDR (they were mostly interested in used Russian cars for export) not possible to pick Mossis in other West European countries, where they were named "Elite", as Belgium and Austria.
:think: IIRC these Red Army soldiers were not even allowed to go to West Germany even after the unification.
