This picture is from the first season which began on 2nd January 1962. The car is a Ford Zephyr mark 2 saloon. By the following september, this was replaced by the more striking appearance of the mark 3 saloon for the second season.

Z cars still remains a favourite among british police dramas. The frist two episodes were released a short while ago on VHS.

 I've seen some clips from a colour episode where a Triumph 2000 or 2500 was driven by the police.

 The front grille with the centre badge, and no chrome surrounds of the head lights suggests a Zephyr made between autumn 1957 and February 1959.

 Other cars used in Z-Cars include Ford Consuls and Zephyrs for CID use, and I do remember some Ford Anglia saloons (both 100E and 105E) some in black, and some in pale blue with white doors (the archetypal 'Panda' car) Austin or Morris Mini vans, Ford Escort Mk I Pandas, Triumph 2000/2.5 PI Mk II, and Rover 2000 (P6). I also remember an Austin LD 'Black Maria' Police van.
